“Property in a great location but very noisy because of delivery vans for shop, pub and restaurant.”

Also refuse collection lorries (private and public) nearly everyday. Home well equipped and welcome cream tea, wine and flowers a lovely surprise. Has a parking space which is a great bonus but virtually impossible to park as space has very narrow access ( bring a small car). This house has lovely views of the sea from the bedrooms and really central to access nearby beaches and footpaths. This is not a good choice for someone with mobility issues as lots of quirky steps to access two of the bathrooms. Nice garden and good area for hanging out washing and wet swim gear - v useful outside tap and shower, which can be accessed without trapsing through the house. Very nice tasteful furnishings - obviously the owner of this house cares about their guests. We had a great holiday.

“I intend to write to you more fully.”

We expected something very special for the price of this property and we did not think we got that. I think that the owners are resting on their laurels in that the position of the property is exceptional, and the fact that there is parking justifies the very high price. Whilst the kitchen is well equipped it is so badly designed as to be almost unworkable with the fridge down a bottleneck and almost impossible to get to. More to the point is the fact that the shower in the twin bedded room is simply not fit for purpose. It is not possible to turn it on and not be in the cubicle. You have to run through the gamut of freezing cold water to get to the desired temperature and the power of the shower is way too strong for the tiny size of the cubicle. In the other en suite bathroom there is no mirror … nor are there any hand rails to help with the large step down into the bathroom. We failed to get any water flow in the family bathroom. We also discovered that the Draconian check in and check out times are a throw back to Covid and other properties have reverted to a more sympathetic pre-Covid times. I know a lot of people in the village of Portscatho many of whom have rental properties and they could not believe the price. The fact that the price was reduced by £1000 because it was not let in the preceding week left us feeling pretty fed up. I understand that this is a question of the owner’s taste but the art work on the walls is simply ghastly and totally inappropriate for a rental property. It looks like the work of a student on crack cocaine; it is unsettling and horrible. All in all we were disappointed in what we thought was going to be a spectacular property.

“Given the age of the property the kitchen and utility are probably as good as it gets without knocking walls down and making it open plan which would be a great advantage.”

The two bedrooms with en suites are once again restricted by the space available. However having said all that the position of the house could not be better and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only slight criticism we have is regarding the cleanliness, the whole house could do with really good “spring clean”

“Great location.”

A very well-stocked kitchen for glasses, cups, plates, cutlery, pots and pans. However, with the fridge and tea and coffee-making area in a small adjoining room and with the main kitchen dominated by a large Woden island/table, it's quite awkward to cook in. In the dining room, there is a serious trip hazard in the form of a raised floorboard in the left-hand side of the room as you go in and I do feel that this needs to be clearly highlighted, I myself tripped over it a couple of times, fortunately not carrying anything. There is also a very high step up to the mezzanine bathroom but this is clearly indicated and there is also a handrail. The back garden is not sea-facing, but it is lovely and a real sun trap. If you like unusual quirky layouts you'll love this place.

“Location of property and views was fabulous.”

Also the welcome pack and flowers was really appreciated along with the property being very clean. A few small point for improvement: Need to have two keys - one was not ideal. Kitchen area was crowded with central island - could be reduced in size to enable more usable space as with 5 of usthere with adog, we needed to have aone way system. Number of drink mugs and bowls was less than ideal. A few things appeared a little tiered or not recently checked, for example sink in main bedroom - very slow draining, electric towel radiator not working although power to it, kitchen- hob extractor fan not working.

It is a character house, a little quirky, but has been modernised well and is very comfortable and well equipped including high quality bedding and towels. The garden is delightful and dog proof which is rare in a holiday home!

“Beautiful cottage and location let down by cleaners.”

Cottage was not ready on arrival because beds had not been made. We found a bag of rubbish outside the back door, vegetable waste stuck to the bottom of the kitchen bin, frozen peas in the ice tray in the freezer and sticky marks on kitchen surfaces. Not what we expected particularly with current standard and earlier checkout and later check in times to allow for more thorough cleaning. The caretaking couple were most helpful in working to get the cottage ready for us and keeping us updated and the welcome tray was lovely, especially the treats for the dog- lovely touch! The place itself was delightful and the location perfect with great access to coastal walks and beaches. Lovely outside space and loads of charm and character. We will probably return. If anything it is over equipped, a good clear out of some of the cupboards and surplus equipment would make it easier to keep clean. No one needs 4 chopping boards on holiday!!!

“I think you definitely need to retake photos of the new garden and or say that it has changed and you only get a much smaller garden and layout.”

For small children I would say they would need supervision all the time as there is a big gap at the end of the rail by fence that they can fall though and big drop. The house was fantastic we had a great stay. Location for everything is great. And the outdoor shower is the best when you come of the beach.

“There are 3 photos of the outside space to the rear of the property which was included on your listing of a lovely, well kept shaded garden, The reality was that most of this space has either been recently dug up and replaced with the most horrible, uncomfortable to walk on gravel or has been fenced off and given to the neighbouring property.”

The other side of this fence was a daily non-stop cement mixer and workmen from 8am to 4pm - so not only was there barely any garden (& what had been kept, had not been tidied or grass cut). I was not made aware that I would be spending considerable amount of money to be holidaying next door to a lot of building work and constant coming and goings of builders/deliveries etc - one 1 occasion I was asked by a delivery driver to accept a large Ikea order on behalf of the builders who had gone home. I am looking forward to a refund.

Thank you for your feedback. The garden has undergone improvements to give a much better patio and garden view. There is a new turfed lawn and stone walling as well as new fencing both wooden and safety metal fencing to give privacy from neighbours. An old fishing net shed has been moved from next to the patio to give a better outlook and light. Unfortunately, two large old apple trees unfortunately fell in a storm. All internal work next door has now been completed and the property manager is making sure than any external work is being carried out when guests are out to avoid any disruption. Property Owner

Overall good but for the price expected decent pillows, mattress protectors and bins in the rooms. The house could have done with some books on shelves which were bare. There was a lovely welcome pack with homemade scones, jam and clotted cream.

Plenty of room without being on top of each other. Ideally situated to enjoy the beaches, walks and local amenities. Having the pub so close was great after long walks and a lovely pint. Great food. The outside space and the shower room out the back was ideal for the dog to be washed off. We will definitely be back!

“The property is perfectly situated in a small but bustling, beautiful village.”

Shop, pub, restaurant, beach, family club and takeaway all within a 2 minute walk. Minor thing, for all the kitchen and utility space there is, there is no storage for dry goods (cereal, tins, etc), not a big deal really. Everywhere is dog friendly though the beach in the village is not during the summer months. There is however, a bigger, better, dog friendly beach, only a 10 minute walk away. Garden was great (not over grown at all). We loved every minute of our holiday here.

“The reviews that we had read prior to booking were accurate.”

The bad points were: the incredibly overgrown garden and patio, front and back, a real mess so we couldn't use them at all; the house could have been cleaner particularly the kitchen utensils and it needs more crockery; the stairs (lots of quirky steps in and out of bathrooms) are very steep and should be highlighted in the description; all the furnishings and ornaments/artworks are very old and tatty, looks like a bunch of things that no one wanted. The kitchen island is absolutely huge to the point of making it difficult to move around when preparing food and the various utility rooms are full of junk.The good points were the location, and that's what you pay for - to be in the central village square walking distance from everything; the beds are very comfortable and the showers all work very well. I've used Sykes for years to book cottages and loved them all. This is the first time I felt the need to review one (negatively) - a prime location should not be an excuse to charge such a high rental when the house is not maintained properly.

“There was a pot of clotted cream and margarine in the fridge and a jar of jam and four scones in the kitchen waiting for us which was a lovely start to our holiday.”

The cottage was very tidy and spacious. The only negative thing I can say is that the washing machine didn't spin, drain or wash our clothes thoroughly and needs to be looked at. Also the washing line in the garden needs to be replaced as the current one is unusable. Luckily there was a dryer. There also needs to be locks on the en-suite doors and the window to the main bathroom didn't open. There was off road parking for one car which was fab. and there was a small beach within a two minute walk and a general shop also within a minute's walk. All in all it was a pleasant week although we won't be staying here again as we like to try different areas to stay in each year.

Access to main bathroom I believe not to standard and are a trip hazard.

“Portscatho is a small but wonderfully positioned village, for walks along the coast, and relatively quiet coves and beaches.”

Friendly local pub which does excellent food (you need to book) and excellent local shop and butcher. House old, beautiful and quirky. We would definitely go back. Parking isn't easy in the village but there is space for a medium sized car in front of the house.

“Great location.”

Comfy beds and nice hot powerful showers. The house was freezing when we arrived - colder than outside. It would have been nice if the heating had been put on for us. The stairs are uneven - not a problem for us but could be tricky for some older people.
