The historic market town of St Austell has plenty to offer any visitor. Ideally situated for exploring the whole of the south coast, the town itself also warrants your attention. Thanks to the china clay industry (which is still active unlike most of Cornwall’s other mining industries) St Austell became a thriving hub in the region, and you can learn all about its history in the St Austell Town Museum. St Austell holiday homes give you easy access to shops, markets, historic buildings and more in the town itself. And, as it’s only about a mile inland, you can be at the beach in no time.

Places to visit in and around St Austell

Cottages in St Austell are so popular because of the huge range of attractions and other beautiful locations nearby. Just a couple of miles away is the Eden Project which is built in one of the area’s many china clay pits. You can spend the day exploring their tropical gardens and other attractions before returning to your St Austell holiday home to unwind.

If you want to explore the beaches, just a mile away from St Austell is the historic and immaculately preserved Georgian port of Charlestown. A favoured filming location for period dramas, this picturesque port often has tall ships anchored in the harbour and offers beautiful walks along the coast. Head further to the south and you’ll reach Pentewan with its wide open sands and clear waters. A visit to Pentewan also puts you close to the Lost Gardens of Heligan with its magical forest walks and attractions. And nearby Mevagissey is a picture postcard Cornish fishing village, with a distinctive twin harbour and a beautiful patchwork of cottages, pubs, art galleries, and shops. It’s places like these that make self-catering in St Austell so popular.

If you fancy exploring the rugged north coast, then cottages in St Austell are surprisingly well situated. The drive to the surfer’s paradise of Newquay and the legendary fishing port of Padstow is around 40 minutes for either.
