“We have just returned from Cornwall, having booked Parula for 6 nights.”

We arrived during a good spell of weather and as soon as we walked in the door, it smelt very mouldy and damp, we opened every door and window to try and get fresh air, even the furniture and bedding smelt of mould/damp and were slightly damp to the touch. We then noticed that there was mould all over the Lino on the kitchen floor, which had obviously been scrubbed away at some point. We stayed there for two nights, but as we were very concerned about the effect of mould/ damp on our health, ...

We stayed there for two nights, but as we were very concerned about the effect of mould/ damp on our health, we decided to find alternative accommodation. We approached the owner and politely informed him of our findings and our decision not to stay there. He said it was the first time he had heard this and couldn’t smell anything himself due to a sinus issue, but did agree with us that the mould was on the kitchen floor. After leaving the property, we decided to look at a few more reviews and going back further there were other people who had mentioned this to him and he had denied it then also. We want people to be aware of this issue before booking or arriving as if someone with asthma or chest problems stays there it could seriously impact their health.

The property

Close to the coast, Parula is a smart bolt-hole for two in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Cornwall’s far west.

It sits amid open fields and atmospheric moorlands in the remote hamlet setting of Kelynack, one mile from the bustling town of St Just.

Walkers, romantics, beachcombers, bird watchers, artists, and city escapees will love it here!

Access to the Coast Path is a 20 minutes walk and St Just is 1.8 miles from Parula.

Step out the front door and follow the lane down to where it meets the south west coast path and Nanquidno Cove, which is a popular spot for bird watching, surfing and spectacular sunsets.

For epic views, follow the path west along tall granite cliffs to Gwenver Beach, Sennen Cove and Land’s End or head east towards Cape Cornwall and St Just where you will find good pubs, cafes and delicatessens as well as several art galleries, including Kurt Jackson's Jackson Foundation.

Continue a little farther to explore the iconic engine houses at Botallack where the Poldark mine scenes were filmed.

Follow the scenic coast road to St Ives for world-class beaches and restaurants plus a tempting array of trendy boutique shops and arty galleries, including the Tate.

The castle topped island of St Michael’s Mount and The Minack, an outdoor theatre carved into the cliff face, are also a must for the itinerary.

Situated beside the owners home but none the less, private, modern and pristine, Parula is a comfortable bungalow to return to.

Sit out on the sheltered patio with a glass of red at hand, fire up the barbecue and admire rural views, with the occasional Skybus aircraft, operating to and from the Isles of Scilly from the adjacent Aerodrome.

Newly refurbished, the interior is arranged on one level.

All mod cons are provided, from a dishwasher to a washer dryer, and coffee machine.

The sitting room has plump sofas, good books/games, a dining table and a door to the private patio.

You will find a spacious bedroom with a comfortable bed dressed in cotton bed linens and ample storage.

The sparkling shower room includes thick fluffy towels and a shower that is large enough for two.

About the location

ST JUST

Penzance 7.2 miles; St Ives 12.9 miles.

St Just is the nearest town to Land’s End and is situated approximately eight miles west of Penzance. The town itself is an ancient settlement that has a strong mining history and there are several monuments and prehistoric antiquities to visit including the Bronze Age settlement at Cape Cornwall. St Just is ideally located for visitors to explore the far west of Cornwall as it is situated on the edge of the moors and close to the beautiful north coast. In the centre of the town is Plain-an-Gwarry, a theatre used for miracle plays in medieval times, and in more recent times for the Lafrowda Festival.

Sorry no children or infants.
