“We had the best week in Looe and Elmbank was the icing on the cake!”

Spotlessly clean, had everything you could possibly require, spacious, welcoming and the most comfortable beds! The views especially from first floor bedroom when you opened the curtains in the morning made the holiday. I underestimated when booking, how steep the climb would be to the house, so if mobility is an issue that is the only minus point but the house and terrace was definitely worth it and as a previous reviewer said burns off ‘Sarah’s Pasties’! Booking the Quadbike and Trailer on our departure was a revelation and another time, now we know the steepness of the hill, would definitely book both ways next time - a brilliant service. We will be back for sure!

“Our third stay (in 13 months) at Elmbank was as good as it gets!”

The best thing remains the view over the harbour with so much to watch from the tranquil and extensive patio area. And the walk up the hill from the town seemed to get shorter each time. We used the dedicated car parking space again - nice to have the car in sight and in a secure compound. We’ll be back next year of course.

“Lovely lovely Property, really easy to access, to find.”

We actually arrived at two in the morning and still everything was fine which I was worrying about. Anybody with mobility issues would struggle I think that’s the only thing I would highlight. Don’t underestimate just how steep those hills are.

“A fantastic house with a great view over the harbour.”

The house met all our expectations and we had a lovely stay in Looe. 'The Hill' has had a lot of mentions here and it is a bit of an issue. Good exercise though! And Looe is set in a steep valley so access to most properties will involve a hill of some sort.

“The house was immaculate with amazing an view, everything you could need was provided and the beds were so comfortable.”

I suffer with a bad back but never had a problem waking up in the bed here. To add the area is fantastic lots to do for everyone, we went with my nan and two 6 year olds and and everyone had a great time. Would highly recommend this house and will be back in the future

“We had a great stay at Elmbank.”

Lovely view of Looe and the estuary and easy walking distance to the town and beach. Property had everything we needed and was very comfortable. Unfortunately the weather decided not to behave so only got a few drinks in on the terrace under the supplied blankets but still got to the beach and did lots of crabbing. Parking space much appreciated and a great bonus. Hill to the property was no issue for us with 2 pensioners in the family party and helped burn off the pasties

“It’s hard to imagine a better house in Looe!”

The house is comfortable and beautifully furnished but best of all is the view from all the rooms at the front. The extensive patio area is a bonus! So the slog of getting stuff up there is well worth it - and apparently there is a luggage taxi service.

“We had a great stay at Elmbank.”

The house was really spacious and comfy. The views from the two front bedrooms and sitting room was great, overlooking the river, our only disappointment was it was too cold to sit outside on the terrace and enjoy the views from there! We only came across the house guide by accident, which gave us the information as to where we can park our car, so a bit clearer guidance I think would help guests. We stayed out of season and hadn't considered that a lot of the restaurants would have been closed, so not as much choice for food as we'd been expecting, but the places we did eat at were great. Unlike others I had known that there was a steep slope up to the house, but it just meant we got to walk off whatever food we'd just eaten!

The property had everything we needed and it was a very comfortable stay. The parking space, although narrow, was an added bonus and we were very pleased to have use of this. My only tiny niggle is that the parking space provided (which was fab) needs to have defined spaces as unfortunately other users only left a space big enough for a push bike so I couldn't use it.

“Elmbank was absolutely great, comfortable for the 6 of, amenities great along with the extras of beach equipment and trolley to transport beach towels etc.”

Views were outstanding and the best we’ve experienced. Seagulls are mutants and noisy but that’s just Cornwall. The steep hill is the only reason we scored it down as it is steep and hard going for fittest of us but any mobility issues this cottage wouldn’t be suitable again this is Cornwall but you’d be in a sticky situation if you got there and couldn’t manage it. Overall we couldn’t of asked for a better week away weather was hot and the house and views unforgettable. We will definitely be back.

As you say (being Cornwall) there is a steep hill involved and the house unfortunately doesn't suit everyone. “Great location, excellent range cooking options, gadgets, utensils, good quality china and cutlery.”

Comfortable beds and good bathroom facilities. Great instructions and information sent prior to visit. Outside space is disappointing as it could easily be improved, seating is limited for more than 4 adults and garden is unkempt and scruffy. Cleaning inside could be improved, cobwebs everywhere and window sills dusty and unwiped. Lots dog hair on the lounge floor and sofas from previous occupants.

“We loved our stay at Elmbank, a lovely big 3 storey home with absolutely everything you need for a home from home stay.”

Perfect for a family or group of friends as the house is so big. Spotlessly clean with access to plenty of towels and bedding if required. The views overlooking Looe Harbour were spectacular day and night, and as the weather was perfect we loved sitting on the front patio with a bottle of wine. You have use of a bbq, and there are all sorts of things to help with your day on the beach, such as wind breakers, cooler bags, buckets/spades etc, even a trolley to help with carrying it all back and fore. The home has a smart TV so you can access your Netflix and Apple TV accounts, surround sound sonos speakers and plenty of comfortable seating for the nights spent indoors. The kitchen and utility room is equipped for all of your needs, nothing has been forgotten. There's also a small travel hairdryer. The only negatives was the walk up the hill from looe town/beach especially on arrival with heavy luggage and bags, as there was no way our car would fit on the road up to the house. We are fairly fit so it was OK, I wouldn't let it put you off, but we nearly brought our parents who would not have been able to manage the hill every day. The car was parked in the long stay car park, which was again fine for us, as we didn't use tbe car all week as the weather was amazing, and we used the train to travel out of Looe (recommended) but if you have typical British wet weather you would need to walk for about 10 to 15 mins to get the car. Also the garden area needs some tlc, with maybe some extra seating/ sun loungers as it really is a gorgeous sun trap garden. I say these are negatives but they're not the end of the world and won't spoil your stay. We would definitely come back to Elmbank it really is a lovely house to spend your holiday in.

“The house is in a great location but the hill is very steep and long although once you have recovered the view is worth it.”

It would be good to have at least a basic welcome pack. The 2 double bedrooms are spacious with exceptionally comfortable beds. Love is a lovely place with plenty of places to eat and 2 coops for supplies. Coastal walk to polperro is spectacular. We will come again

“Elmbank is a great house for a holiday with dog’s in Looe, although it is a very steep walk up to it which is tricky when unpacking and repacking to leave as you have to carry everything up and down.”

The parking is however not a problem both in the paying car parks or in the space provided just across the bridge. The house itself is very comfortable, great beds and a decent television and in the summer I’m sure the garden would be lovely with great views over the harbour. I accidentally left some clothes in the wardrobe and Dilly the house keeper could not have been more helpful with reacquainting me with them! Despite the steep hill we would definitely stay here again don’t be out off by it!

“From reading the reviews afterwards aswell the main issue seems to be the very steep hill which was not made clear until we received the welcome pack.”

The beds were fantastically comfortable, and the shower was powerful and hot, we felt the front room furniture was tired and the sofa had a number of stains on. The kitchen was very dark with hardly any natural light coming through. The closeness to the town was very good but the steep hill put us off going up and down more than once or getting dressed up and putting shoes that were not suitable for going up and down on the hill. Considering the location of the property anx the cost of the week, a basic welcome could of been provided.

“Fabulous holiday home with lots of space.”

Balcony with the view over the estuary was just fabulous and we spent most of our time out there as we were blessed with some lovely weather! The free parking was fantastic - great to have and only a few minutes walk across the bridge. Very steep walk up to the house which was absolutely fine for our family but would be a struggle for the less mobile. Looe is beautiful and there is so much more to see and do than we ever imagined! We loved our time here and would return in a heartbeat.

“A wonderful property with a stunning view to while away a few hours watching life on the estuary and viewing the sunset.”

The house had been cleaned thoroughly before arrival, so felt really comfortable in these strange times. So good to have quality king size beds and mattresses to ensure a good nights sleep, with the seagulls providing a natural alarm clock. Like other comments, this is a lovely period house but the road to the house was designed for a horse and cart more than the modern car, great as no traffic to disturb you, but would only attempt it if you have a small car. The town is very busy this year, so book restaurants and trips ahead to avoid disappointment. My tip is that as there is a short but very steep hill to climb out of the town centre back to the house, take some bags with you and bring a few groceries back each time you go out. Better still book a fishing trip on one of the boats advertising on the quayside and catch your own supper. Overall we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to anyone looking for a holiday in Looe.

“Our stay at this property was fantastic.”

The house was really comfortable and had everything we needed and the location into to town was superb. The free parking space was a bonus too. We were a family with a 3year old and 4month old and a 71 year old and although the hill was steep we did manage it quite well. The only challenge is the packing and unpacking as we could not get the car close by, however don’t let this put you off as the views and the comfort of this property more than made up for it. We had good contact with the owner and I felt very informed. Sainsbury’s also did a big food delivery for us although we did help the driver out. I would not hesitate to recommend this property.

It is only a very short but steep walk down into the town centre shops, restaurants, pubs and the beautiful sandy beach. We really enjoyed our stay at Elmbank, the beds are wonderfully big and comfortable and the house was quiet, warm, clean, spacious and well equipped.

“Elmbank is a lovely well equipped property, with good quality fixtures and fittings and fabulous views towards West Looe and the Millpool.”

The lower end of Shutta Road is indeed steep but eventually levels out, the house and views make the uphill stroll worth it. We also found space 59 in the Beach car park too small for our estate car. However the Millpool car park just over the bridge is free overnight from 6pm to 9am and with pay by phone really easy to add an hour in the morning without leaving your bed! We would definitely return to Elmbank if looking to stop in that part of Cornwall again. Comprehensive user guide from the owners contained lots of useful information.

“Romano is a lovely house very clean and comfortable.”

The only drawback is the location fantastic views but the walk up the hill a couple of times a day is quite difficult. I think the ad should state that anyone with any kind of walking difficulties should think about booking this property. The car parking we found a nightmare the designated car parking space 59 is so difficult to park in unless you have a small car. We had to pay for parking most of the week.

“Elmbank is a gorgeous house - really spacious and well equipped.”

It is also in a great position, only a few minutes’ walk from the town with various shops, including 2 Co Ops and approx 10 mins walk from the beach. As others have mentioned, the hill to get up Shutta Road is pretty steep but we managed it with our 3 children aged 6, 3 and 9 months, usually going out at least twice a day. Pushing the buggy up was hard though!! The owners sent us a pdf with lots of really useful information the day before our stay and it was a nice surprise to find out that a parking permit would be available as this wasn’t included within the Sykes listing. When we arrived we were a bit nervous to use it as the details were completely faded and unreadable - but after a quick message to the East Looe Town Trust who manage the car park, they provided us with a new replacement permit. The car park is next to the beach, which was actually handy for leaving beach gear in but the spaces are very tight so unless you have a small car, you probably wouldn’t want to have to navigate getting in and out each day. We actually didn’t use the car all week which was lovely and although this was one of the more expensive places we have stayed in recently (also much bigger, as it has 3 bedrooms when we only really needed 2), it was well worth the money to be able to walk everywhere and nip down to the beach when the sun popped out. There are very few downsides to this property but if you are thinking of staying with young children (crawlers) be aware that there are 2 open fires with real coals in. We left our 9 month old in the lounge for a few mins when we arrived and came back to find him looking like a chimney sweep!! There is also not much of a garden - only a paved area but with a picnic bench - but this wasn’t an issue with the beach so close. We are were also confused as to why a note had been left in the property stating that recycling wouldn’t be taken that week - even though other houses on the road had their recycling bags out and a quick chat with one of the general refuse collectors confirmed that recycling would be taken as usual. However, the bags weren’t left for us so we didn’t have much choice which doesn’t sit well when we try hard to be as eco friendly as we can.

“The cottage was lovely and exactly as described in the details, however on arrival we struggled to find the car park(s) that were suggested, so we parked in the closest, and set off walking up to the house, Shutta Road is a very steep road and I don’t feel that the steepness and length of the walk required is explained fully, we were 4 healthy adults, anyone with children would possibly struggle, especially with luggage.”

On arriving at the cottage there was a key and car park pass but no more information as to where the car park was, we did eventually find it after 2 days of asking around, even asking the car park attendants, this had meant that we had to keep moving the car and paying to park. I feel that a little welcome note would have been appreciated to let us know about the car parking, what to do with the rubbish and what to do with bedding on leaving.

The property

A spacious Victorian townhouse nestled in the town centre of Looe, on the Cornish coast.

Polperro 5 miles.

Looe is Cornwall’s second largest fishing port and hence there is always a lively maritime bustle around the quay area of East Looe, which is connected to the quieter West Looe by a seven arched 19th century bridge over the River Looe. You can also catch the river taxi between East and West Looe. East Looe has narrow cobbled streets, twisting alleyways and plenty of tourist shops, whilst West Looe has a lovely outlook across the harbour. Looe’s viewpoint, Banjo Pier, can be reached from the quay and is a great spot to watch the returning fishing trawlers and look across the bay to Looe Island, which can be walked to occasionally at very low tides. The sandy Looe beach adjoins the pier and is very popular with families because of its safe shallow swimming and vast expanse of sand. There is also a great rock pool area at Hannafore that children will love. West Looe has a Heritage Centre that recently opened in the Old Sardine Factory with a climbing wall and a cafe and the delightful Kilminorth Woods have way marked walks through the majestic oak wood, rich in plant, insect and bird life. Apart from beach activities in this part of south east Cornwall, there are many mining remains on Bodmin Moor and in the Tamar Valley and much of the mining landscape has World Heritage status. This area of Cornwall has inspired writers, such as Daphne du Maurier and much of Bodmin Moor has inspired legends linked with King Arthur. There is much to explore in this beautiful part of Cornwall.
